IPL SNUBS ENGLISH CRICKETERS

February 17, 2012

The England Cricket Team might be the number one test team in the world and might be playing some of the best cricket in the world, but the Indian Premier League franchises chose to turn a blind eye to almost all the players who were up for auction ahead of the fifth edition of the extremely popular and money making Twenty 20 League. In spite of being billed as one of the favorites to land a team in the initial processes, wicket keeper batsman Matt Prior went unsold as did his international teammates like James Anderson, Graeme Swann and Ian Bell.

This black out by the Indian Premier League franchises mean that only Eoin Morgan of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Kevin Pietersen of the Deccan Chargers, currently contracted to the Delhi daredevils after a trade off and Stuart Broad of the Kings XI Punjab, who were all picked up at the auction last year will represent England in the popular Twenty 20 League.

No one had guessed prior to the event that the English players would be blacked out this way and with their low base price as well. It was thought that the trio of Anderson, Graeme Swann and Matt Prior would get teams this year after showing some scintillating displays over the last one year or so. However, the franchise owners had other things in mind and did not even bid for any of the players, thereby disappointing all of them.

None of the English players commented about their snub from the IPL, most being busy with the England Cricket Team in the United Arab Emirates ahead of their One Day International series against Pakistan.

Matt Prior, however, is hoping that he still might get a side owing to the busy schedules for the international teams, according to sources close to him.

RAZZAK IN GROUP A

January 23, 2012

Keeping in line with the Indian Premier League, many of its neighboring countries are planning to start a tournament on the same lines. Pakistan and Bangladesh are already finalizing plans to start such a tournament. The various franchises in the Bangladesh Premier League have already recruited players for their respective teams.

Each player is placed in one of three categories. Players in group A have a base price of $45,000; those of group B have a base price of $30,000 while players in group C have a base price of $20,000. Among the players in group A are Mashrafe Mortaza, Abdur Razzak, Junaid Siddiqui and Nasir Hosain. There are only six cricketers in the top group, and each one has been very successful. Abdur Razzak is the country’s highest wicket-taker in the one day format of the game.

Most of the franchises are looking at previous captains to be selectors for their sides, but the franchise based in Sylhet has already made it clear that it’s looking at Wasim Akram to be the coach for the side. Other than Akram, they also have many other high profile twenty20 players in their sights. One of the franchise’s top officials, Uday Hakim told the press that they are considering recruiting players like Sanath Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralidharan. From the local bunch, they are looking to select young all-rounders who can contribute a lot to the team. Other franchises like the Rajshahi franchise have enlisted the help of former opener Athar Ali Khan and former captain Faroque Ahmed to be part of the team’s strategic planning committee. The franchise based in the capital, Dhaka, has sought the services of Habibul Bashar, current national selector and former national captain.

What remains to be seen is how the local tournament affects the national players, for good or bad.
